Lots going on in Kansas City, especially this time of year. Tornado watches and warnings were afoot when this post was being compiled, and we can say, luckily, it did not hurt people, just some signs and such. Scared them and all, yes. With half their market being on the Kansas side of the state line, a tornado is not all that rare. Think Dorothy and Toto. Bad weather finds the TV meteorologists in high demand; their skills and information essential. Lots of TV sets tuned in. One station in the market has two new promo helpers for the no doubt de rigueur POP. CSD MIKE STEWART has brought JILL BALLARD on board as his Assistant Creative Services Director and welcomed first-time-TV-job producer CHANCE PARSONS. Oh, the station is CBS affil KCTV, owned by Meredith. Jill has come to to KC from Springfield, MO, where she got her degree from Missouri State U before she was a Producer and Director for KOLR. Bonus points if you know the former name of Missouri State. Jill of late has been Digital Content Director at KRBK in Brad Pitt’s hometown. More on Chance when the weather is better…he’s been tied up. Let’s all give these two a big Well Dunne!
May the 4th be with you.

It makes total sense to make the Digital Promotions Manager the Creative Services Director. And that’s what WYFF, the NBC affil in the Greenville – Spartanburg, South Carolina has done. With the retirement of long-time CSD MASHA JARRETT, the Hearst folks have named KELLY HOFFMAN to the role. She’s been with them for about 15 years, mainly doing promo writing and producing. Her degree is from Ohio University and she worked in Columbus right after college at WSYX/WTTE. She’s going to shine, n’est-ce pas? Oui Well Dunne! Kelly.

She’s starting on Thanksgiving Day…it’s auspicious to pick such a memorable day to begin a new chapter. CHRISTINE VARGAS is doing just that – picking Thanksgiving, when she starts as News Promotion Manager at Tribune’s FOX affil in San Diego. I bet they’ll have pumpkin pie (at least) for her, eh? Christine is coming over from CBS affil KFMB in SD where she started as Promo Coordinator and was upped to Topical then Senior Promo Producer…shows good work and an eye that her former CSD, MIKE STEWART, had. Very excited for her. Well Dunne! Christine.
Listen up folks in the DC area. Well, more specifically one particular area, namely Gaithersburg, Maryland. Tomorrow (Tuesday Nov 7) is election day and the talented JIM MCNULTY is running for City Council. Do we need to tell you to vote? OK, then – GO VOTE. For him. The University of Scranton grad started his creative career (yes, he’s a TV creative!) at WYOU in Wilkes-Barre, PA and honed his creative promo chops in DC at WJLA, WRC and WBDC before catching on at Discovery Home/TLC and working at any number of creative leadership roles for the behemoth media co. Now he’s the owner of his own shop – Wurdsmith Creative. He’d be a super councilman! So Gaithersburgers…get out there and do the citizenship thing. Well Dunne! Jim.
Worry not…none of the WRAL promo folks were injured in the fire that broke out at their Raleigh studios on Friday night. Good news indeed.

There’s no place like home…and with the holidays coming up, that sentiment is all the more real. And it’s the reason that MIKE STEWART is going to Kansas City as the new CSD of the Meredith CBS affil KCTV. He’ll be decamping the CSD slot in San Diego at another CBS affil KFMB. Mike and his wife are going to be way closer to family. Mike’s a grad of Kansas University (go Jayhawks) who got his start in TV at KJRH in Tulsa, where he manned the Assignment Desk before jumping to their promotion department. He then went to do promo in Houston at KPRC before heading up I-45 to be Promo Manager for DAVID HERSHEY at CBS’ KTVT. Gonna love having the seasons again and paved roads that aren’t so bumpy they’re nearly undrivable. (Yes, talking to you San Diego Street Department!). A great big Midwest Well Dunne! to Mike!

A new month – the perfect time to consider something afresh. How about the concept of paying it forward. The marvelously talented GM MARYANN BALBO of WHDF in Huntsville recently did a LinkedIn post asking who in your past gave you a break, citing that none of us are born into the jobs we do to bring home the bacon (so to speak). Apologies to any royalty reading this. Once in LA, a producer was challenged on this point, not wanting to give a writer a project. The writer snapped “Tell me how to spell your name again…Oprah might want you on the show, seeing as you’re the only producer ever born to the role.” The concept of seeing something in someone, sensing that they have abilities and talents they aren’t currently using is one of the marks of a leader. MIKE STEWART, CSD of KFMB in San Diego just sent his, as if on cue: “I love giving opportunities to people who have that “something” inside of them that transcends a résumé. Trust me, I’ve been there… time to pay it forward!” Since there are no mistakes – it’s pretty obvious that paying it forward is the theme of August. Mike has hired CASEY NAKAMURA. If you read this on Tuesday, it’s his first as producer at the CBS affil. More from Mike: “He’s a really bright, multi-talented producer who was recently freelancing for corporate videos. He had produced for KUSI a few years ago and he does a lot of work editing videos for competitive video game tournaments.” I sense that it’s all good from here on our for Casey, and Mike, and KFMB…Well Dunne! Casey.
Are you paying it forward?

San Diego is just lovely…the kind of educated, perfect-weather ocean city you imagine when one says when asked ‘where do you want to live?’. So one can imagine why staying there is a great idea. And that’s just what CHRIS PHEIL did when he took a writer producer slot for KFMB’s CSD MIKE STEWART. The two are busy getting ready to take over the CW affiliate in SD end of this month, so Chris is putting in time with that and with the duties of a May book for CBS. Whew! Mr Pheil (pronounced File ) has 17 years experience he’s bringing over from XETV, which seems to have fallen on very hard times, having closed all news operations and will be signing off programs, ceasing to exist. If you have openings, you might want to seek some of these very talented and proficient people out… Chris and Mike get big Well Dunne!s and our wish for a smooth transition.

The gorgeous eastern part of North Carolina is where our news comes from today…from Marketing Manager MARC Morriston (isn’t that fun to say…several times in a row please) who has filled two slots in his CBS/CW operation in the Greenville-New Bern market. AARON BEVILL is the new Marketing Producer. He’s an East Carolina U grad who has been in the film world before choosing to join TV (which is the hot creative place to be). Besides doing freelance production, he wrote and directed several short films, including one called Missing Peace about a WW2 vet. That short film is in the US Holocaust Memorial Museum – very impressive.
The new Promotion Manager is JASON BULLOCK who’s handling commercial production. He’s a UNC-Pembroke guy who has worked at News14 Carolina and had his own production company in Raleigh. You’re both making a big happy difference…Well Dunne!

Remember when I said that Mike Stewart started his career at ABC affiliate KJRH? Don’t remember? Good, cause I bolloxed it up…it’s the NBC affiliate…and (she said blushing) a Well Dunne! station. Gilda was right – it’s always something.

Is there a more gorgeous place than San Diego? I know…Hawaii. True. Charleston and New Orleans would be #1 but for the humidity. No, San Diego wins. La Jolla puts it over the top. Adding to the cache of San Diego come March 10 will be talented MIKE STEWART, who’ll be moving to the Golden State to take over the creative lead at the CBS affil, KFMB. Mike’s a Tulsa guy who earned his degree at KU (he’s a Kansas Jayhawk) before breaking into the biz in his hometown’s ABC affil, KJRH. He was in the newsroom as an Assignment Editor before seeing the creative light and moving to the ad/promo side as a producer. From there he headed to KPRC in Houston and was Promotion Manager until getting tapped at CBS’ KTVT in Dallas-Ft. Worth. Well Dunne! on this exciting new job, Mike.
