Try as one might, making a mint julep – a good one – is not easy. Frankly, the only place where they really know how is Louisville. No place like Derby Town for a real mint julep… or a slice of black bottom pie. Cousins in Louisville who own a restaurant have proved this to be true. That said, it will be up to SCOTT BRADY to find his own favorites when he gets to his new hometown and takes the Creative Services Director slot at WDRB. Being a Tennessee man (Univ of Tennessee Volunteer), Scott will no doubt love the slight southern lilt to the Louisville speech. He’s been in Minneapolis at the FOX duopoly, KMSP/WTFC as VP Creative Services, the same title he had while at Kansas City’s FOX station WDAF. He got his start in Nashville where he was a news editor then a promo producer at WTVF and then Promotion Director at WKRN. All the best in Louisville, Scott. Well Dunne!

The Topical Producer, Creative Services is responsible for writing and producing on-air promotions, proof of performance, and station sponsorship spots.
- Conceptualize, write and edit on-air promotional spots for news, programming, web and special projects using multiple platforms
- Works closely with reporters and management staff on story development and promotional script ideas
- Organize promotion projects
- Interact with and respond to social media audiences
- Analyze rundowns to coordinate the best on-air, social and digital marketing materials
- Track monthly analytics on all current social/digital platforms. Provide ways to optimize platform growth
- Work closely with the team on story development and promotional script ideas
- Work closely with affiliates to support programming on air and online
- Perform other duties as needed by management
Education & Experience/Certifications
- High School diploma (or GED) required. Bachelor’s degree preferred
- 1 – 3 years’ experience of writing or editing in local broadcast preferred
- At least two (2) years professional broadcasting marketing/promotions/creative services experiences required.
Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of social media maintenance
- Understanding of Nielsen rating sheets
- Superb attention to detail, time management skills, and strong communication skills
- Knowledge of post-production television editing techniques, with emphasis on Adobe Creative Suite
- Experience with Final Cut or other nonlinear editing system
- Experience working with camera, audio and light equipment
- Working knowledge of MAC systems
Attention Harpo and Oprah…you can not seriously expect people to sit through a :30 commercial for each and every time one wants to read or watch a quick vignette via your emails – but you do. Some of your content is not even ten seconds long, yet the spot is 3x that length. If one wants to comment on this…ready for it?…one needs to AGAIN SEE A COMMERCIAL. But the best part is after all that, you can’t comment. Not allowed. F in marketing.

Every single state has snow right now. Yep, even Hawaii (the Big Island)…except Florida. Which is where we kick off today’s post. In Tampa, actually. Let’s all raise our OJ’s in a toast to the newly promoted KARLENE BALL, who is now the Promotion Manager of Scripps’ ABC affil WFTS in the Tampa Bay area. An upstate New Yorker by birth, Karlene and her then-boyfriend, now hubby, got sick to death of the winters and they did what many of us have threatened to do – quit the jobs and moved to the beach. With her degree from Plattsburg State in hand plus a resume that included FOX in Albany, Karlene found herself in Tampa and WFTS found her. It was the beginning of a beautiful relationship. She learned how to do TV by doing all the TV jobs, like chyron operator, and landed in the Creative Services department, where she’s steadily been honing her craft. When then-CSD DONNA WILSON got a bump to GM in Tulsa, it was Senior Writer Producer Karlene who kept things going before now CSD DENNIS ELSBURY arrived. This is a fun little twist – as Promotion Manager, she’s working with Dennis for a second time…he was Promo Manager when she first came to the station. Lots of great karma here, including the fact Karlene is a recent mom. Her 4 month old daughter is never that far away thanks to computers and the fact we can email pix all the time. Well Dunne! Karlene!
OPRAH’s very own network, called OWN as you know, is no doubt throwing kisses at the talented crew at BIGSMACK, who took the Bruce Mao Design logo and turned it into an on-air look and promo kit. They did the coolest thing – color coding the elements for each different daypart. Love that. Well Dunne! ANDY HANN and CREW.

43 years is a long time in anybody’s book. But when you’re having fun, it really does fly. 43 is the number of years that WLUK-TV’s PAT KROHLOW has been in the TV biz. Come January 1, he’s retiring. In a business where retirement is rather nebulous, we should all be happy for Pat. What’s on his plate? A move to the Florida beaches? No…Pat and his wife are both winter people who adore snowmobiling and ice fishing, so January will be the ideal time for him to have extra time to devote to fun. Like all imaginative people, Pat is open to some creative project work. He’s going to help his GM JAY ZOLLAR find the next CSD, so dial him and before you talk about the job, tell him Congrats! Stand up to Cancer! That’s the headline today and a reminder of the importance of the show and it’s focus tonight. No excuses for missing it, since it will be on ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, Discovery Health, E!, G4, HBO, HBO Latino, MLB Network, Showtime, The Style Network and TV One and over 30 online streaming partners like AOL, Yahoo! and YouTube. 8 E & P/ 7 C. The highway between Phoenix and Tucson is well traveled. The 116 mile trip seems further than it sounds (think traffic and mountains) but ANDREW CALIENDO will not only be taking it when he wants, not because he has to. Andrew has taken the Promotion Manager slot at CBS affil KPHO in Phoenix. He’s going to be working with CSD MATT HYATT and my favorite Art Director CHRIS AYERS. Andrew’s been down wrangling the creative at KVOA, the NBC affiliate in Tucson. The Phoenix slot will be like old home week for Mr. C…he once worked there writing and producing. Well Dunne! Andrew.
Get a lot of rest this weekend. Monday will be the start of the new season, what with Martha Stewart unpacking for her new slot at Hallmark Channel (I wish Martha would help me move…I bet she never breaks anything and isn’t one of those people who ends up with boxes that never get opened) and Oprah kicking off her last season. There’s tons more, of course, so grab your vitamins and realize now is indeed the time to rationalize buying that 72 inch hi-def.

SHIRLEY POWELL is the new EVP of Corporate Communications at Atlanta-based The Weather Channel Companies. She doesn’t have to change time zones or anything – she comes over from Turner Broadcasting System where she was SVP of Corp Comm. The Temple grad has also done communications work as SVP of PR Entertainment for NBC and was a VP at The Disney Channel. Well Dunne! Shirley.
