71 years in the broadcast biz. That’s the combination of SYDNEY RUBIN and her husband ALEX’s time doing TV marketing and shooting news, respectively. And, as the saying goes, they’ve been there and got the T-shirts, mugs, and branded items galore. Time to try another dance, and that they are. Syd is leaving her News Brand Manager slot at Tribune’s KCPQ in Seattle and Alex is turning his camera into the news ops guy there as well. The two are going to operate their Port Angeles, Washington B&B fulltime. Yes, they bought a B&B and it’s gorgeous. Maitland Manor. See for yourself – that’s the front as today’s picture. Syd’s a grad of the prestigious Syracuse Newhouse School of Communication and has worked in marketing in markets like Albany, Seattle, Colorado Springs.  A consultant for Magid, she knows how to market like a major pro. It’s another loss to the collective marketing world of television. And it might even be an indictment to the way TV works today on a local level. Would say she’d be missed, but that’s not going to happen…we’re going to go see her in Port Angeles and enjoy her delicious cooking, in particular the jams and jellies that add the special je ne sais quoi to breakfast. She’s also going to serve Bailey’s Irish oatmeal. She’ll be around for a few more weeks, so reach out to her yourselves. Saying Well Dunne! seems rather less than called for. But Well Dunne! Rubins.

Wanted to kick off the week with a wonderful story about SYDNEY RUBIN, who has a fabulous adventure ahead of her, and it doesn’t involve TV. OK, she’ll have a TV and cable but her brilliant marketing chops won’t be part of the picture. Tune in tomorrow. It’s just too inappropriate to be happy snappy in light of the events of last week. Eleven dead due to an armed anti-semite in Pittsburgh. Two dead because of an armed racist in Louisville. An arrest in Florida of a right wing fanatic who had Unabomber aspirations. This has GOT to stop. You work in television. You have creative and air time available to you. You have a great deal of power to bring attention to events and the ability to sway hearts and minds. Hate is getting plenty of time on air; any newscast include the words ‘this statement is a lie’? Why not? People are afraid. A drunken, racist woman in Charlotte verbally assaulted two ladies waiting for the Auto Club to arrive and the ladies were afraid. People are attacking your reporters. It’s not like anything that’s ever happened in the US before, including 1968. So use your power to blunt hate.

A cousin who was an emergency room nurse for years had a saying: the gates are wide open. Like most Irish first daughters, the family uses humor to blunt the pain of real life, When she announced the gates were open, she meant the Pearly Gates and she meant that people were leaving the planet fin droves or heaven. Sadly, the gates are open again at the moment. Please send your kind thoughts to KCPQ’s SYDNEY RUBIN whose mother has left us. And please send your kind thoughts to WHNT’s BECKY SHORES whose mother also has left. Both of these talented women are caring and generous. Bless them. Their mothers raised two amazing ladies and I know their mothers are proud of them beyond words.

Think About This:  I am your mother. You are my child. I am your quiet place. You are my wild. I am your calm face. You are my giggle. I am your wait. You are my wiggle. I am your dinner. You are my chocolate cake. I am your bedtime. You are my wide awake. I am your lullaby. You are my peek-a-boo. I am your goodnight kiss. You are my I love you.

Death is a part of life. We all know that. But when someone dies…the feelings we experience are as different as our fingerprints – all the same but all different. In the last few days, the Pearly Gates have swung wide open, as my cousin used to say. On Monday, the lovely SYDNEY RUBIN lost her dad, who passed away in Florida. Ms. Syd has been flying from Seattle, where she works for Tribune’s Q13, to south Florida to do her best to sort out all the is involved with aging parents. Kudos to the fine folks at Tribune (yes, talking about you GM PAM PEARSON and CSD BRENT AYRES) for being supportive and understanding. Please include Syd, her mom and sister and her father in your thoughts.

Hope you’re reading this over your morning cup of (iced) coffee. That way, you can make sure to be at T-H-E session in Vegas. It’s happening at 4 in the afternoon over at Grand Ballroom F at the Mirage. It’s Battle of the Promo Superstars, hosted (moderated, emceed…) by the one and only DAVE BAUMANN. Dave is a man of taste and style who’s Marketing and Creative Director for Stephen Arnold Music. Stephen, btw, has the best hair in the business. Back to Dave, who’s wrangled five incredible CSD’s who’ll go head-to-head with the same story to see who rocks the ‘best’ promo. Competing are LARRY WATZMAN of WBNS/Columbus Ohio, JAMIE HOLMES of KPTV/Portland O, SCOTT ALTUS of KOMO/Seattle, ROBYN KEENEY of KOVR/Sacramento and KELLEN DARGLE of WKYT in Lexington. Robyn is a grad of our Topical Boot Camp, so the Vegas odds are on her (shameless self promotion) as the spot that ya’ll remember best. Right SYDNEY? Bet they’re all going to inspire. As the old radio drag race spots used to say, Be There!

Observations from SYDNEY RUBIN from PROMAX/Vegas: Well Dunne! to the Sony Distribution folks – talkin’ to you RACHEL MIZUNO– on The Goldbergs presentation: an 80’s classroom. Very clever and on theme with the show. They didn’t just phone it in. They topped it off with a clear plastic zip “pencil bag” from that era filled with the erasers of the time and Pop Rocks.

What’s with the tabloid-type shows? A trend? Did anybody think to have temp tattoos for the tabs as a promo? Washable…

The best, most enduring productions aren’t going to gain you ratings. They’ll gain you diapers, 2am feedings and years of PTA duties. And more love than you ever thought possible. Of course, you also get a new title with these special productions: Mom or Dad. Or even Mimi or PawPaw – very creative options for names today. A special production was just recently completed by KARA MCNEELY, VP of Creative Services and Programming for KABC in LA. She welcomed a second little one into her family, and that is exactly like the fabled ‘happy endings’ of a Disney movie. Well Dunne! Kara and family.

If you’re wandering the casino aisles in Vegas, hoping the slots will be as hot as the temps outside, keep an eye out for SYDNEY RUBIN, TERRY KOWALSKI and KAREN YARBROUGH…they’re Well Dunne! stringers and all round fun people to boot. Cause today, with the world technology what it is, nothing that happens in Vegas is guaranteed to stay in Vegas. Hey-ooo.

Things are looking much brighter for SYDNEY RUBIN, BRENT AYRES and the creative folks at KCPQ in Seattle. Despite this past winter being the wettest on record, the forecast is for sunny and bright thanks to the new hire that’s coming on board the Tribune FOX affiliate. ANDREW MAGPOC is headed to Starbuck’s home base from Colorado. He and Ms. Sydney worked together at KOAA in Colorado Springs and the duo looks to continue to create together again. Andrew was most recently at Professional Bull Riders Inc. Yes, how interesting is that when it comes to resume additions. Andrew handled video of course as Sr. Video Editor. No word on whether he wrangled livestock. His background is fascinating – he’s worked for Oprah at Harpo as Motion Graphics Designer. The Hawaiian Islands saw his work as Creative Director at KGMB, as well as promo producing for KHON and KITV. Syd has a nose for talent. He’ll be the Senior Writer Producer in his Seattle slot. Well Dunne! Andrew.

There’s a lot of movement happening… people moving from the mountains to the coast and vice versa. Three major shifts…does that make a trend? It is a pattern – perhaps it might develop into something interesting.  Shift No. 1 is DENNISON HOWARD, a native of Colorado Springs, Born and raised in The Springs, one of the most beautiful places in the country, Dennison is a born storyteller. Started telling stories via his roll as a news cameraman. First at KRDO and then KOAA. He was exceptional behind the lens…was assigned to all the important projects. It wasn’t until his then-CSD SYDNEY RUBIN saw something special and brought him into her department. He loved it…flourished (she’s quite the instructor and mentor) and now he’s on his way to Seattle where he’ll be a writer producer for her team at KCPQ, Tribune’s Fox affiliate. I see a lot more seafood in his future and even more exciting work coming out of the station. He begins March 19. Well Dunne! Dennison.

Chicago is a great city. A solid, vibrant town that loves food, family and doing a great job. And it’s quite the sports town, what with the Cubs winning the World Series just to name one sports achievement. It’s a good thing for NIKKI WASSERMAN, who’s heading to Chi-town to work with JAY WADHWA’s creative team at Comcast SportsNet Chicago. Yes, she’s a huge sports fan and a fab creative. CSD HENRY VASQUEZ is going to miss her as are all the folks at KLAS in Vegas. She’s a Ft Myers, Florida lady who went to college in Pennsylvania. She interned at WPVI in Philly and worked at WFTX in the Naples market. She’s a real go-getter. She’ll be staying in Vegas til the end of the February book, so there’s lots of time to hit her up with a Well Dunne! Nikki.

Job Alert – Promo Producer KCPQ/KZJO Seattle (working with the #1 best promo person around and that’s not up for discussion..SYDNEY RUBIN!)

If you’re sleepless in Seattle, it’s because there are too many amazing things to see and do in this Pacific Northwest gem. Now’s your chance to join our Seattle based creative team at KCPQ/Q13 and KZJO/Joe TV. We’re looking for a promo producer who can bring their talent to driving late news viewership in primetime and across our social platforms. Topicals? Yes, but we’re not like other news stations. If you want to push new concepts to move audiences in social media, we want to talk to you. If you want to live in a city that offers oceans, lakes, mountains, and one of the most vibrant cultural scenes in the country, (and no state income tax!), you’ll want to talk to US!

Show us why our team should be your team. Send your resume and reel (links preferred) to srubin@kcpq.com and apply online at tribunemedia.com/careers.

Hearst hit the jackpot when they hired JAY CHALMERS as the Assistant Creative Services Director for their ABC affil in Palm Beach, WPBF. CSD HEATH MYRICK has hired a real go-getter creative … hip hip hurray! Clay is a Gainesville Florida native who went to Florida State, which means he was playing both sides of the football field, Florida collegiate style. Gators and Seminoles…very dicey subject. After FSU, he then went to the esteemed Savannah College of Art and Design earning a Masters in Film and Television Production. He’s worked as a producer, first doing commercials in Gainesville at WCJB then up to Jacksonville doing promo for First Coast News (WTLV/WJXX) then to Orlando’s FOX WOFL for CSD CHRIS FRIEDRICHS (hi Chris!)…all the while thinking that experiencing different seasons might be fun, as opposed to nonstop sunshine and palm trees. Nah…  Jay’s hitting the Palm Beaches just in time for ‘The Season’, dahling. Amazing people-watching along Worth Avenue.  So glad to hear about such a happy move, which means he’s still close to family and his wife is happy. Can’t beat that. Well Dunne! Jay.

It’s the perfect…no the most perfect… time to be in New York City. Christmas tree going up at 30 Rock, ice skating, window shopping, more lights than ever. When KEITH MORAN shared that he was the new writer producer for VP MISSY CRAWFORD’s creative team at WNBC, the idea of how lucky he is was the first thing that popped to mind. Keith is going to be promoting the largest local TV investigative unit in NYC while working with Missy and Promo Manager PHYLLIS OHNEMUS. He calls it hitting the promo home run. His first spot dealt with their chief investigative reporter going to Europe to follow the NYPD anti-terror program.  As if he needs more to be ideal, his hometown of Schenectady is just two plus hours north. Keith has moved from Chicago, where he was a promo producer at the FOX/CW duop for VP STEVE DONALD, who Keith says gave him his first big market. Niiiice. Mr. Moran has also worked doing promo and production in St. Louis, Indianapolis, his hometown at WRGB and in Albany. Can’t wait to see you soon, KM. Til then a big Well Dunne! Keith!

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, it’s time to enjoy what might be the funniest TV episode – ever – the Turkey Promotion epi of WKRP in Cincinnati. “As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly,” is a line so classic, nothing more needs to be added. We all have stories about promos, events, shoots, people that did something silly…and it’s time to wrangle them in one place. Enter the brains of Topical Boot Camp, SYDNEY RUBIN, who is collecting antedotes, stories, and even folk tales of promo mishaps. What Fun! Share with her and we’ll all have some great laughs. Yes, names will be changed if requested to protect the guilty or easily embarrassed.

Adventuresome, confident and adaptable – all hallmarks of those who, as BARRY FITZSIMMONS has dubbed, are Promo Cowboys – those who venture forth, town to town, to do creative work. Unlike some career choices, TV marketing doesn’t offer a career path that generally allows upward mobility without changing locations. But for those who love what they do, jumping into a new market…a new city…learning about different people and yourself at the same time. It’s all exhilarating. SYDNEY RUBIN is about to venture forth and embrace Seattle, where she’ll be News Brand Manager for Tribune’s Fox affil KCPQ. She’ll be working with Director of Marketing and Creative Services, BRETT AYRES as well as GM PAM PIERSON, who has a background in markting. It’s gonna be a lot of fun…and Seattle is going to see some amazing work thanks to Ms. Syd. And yes, she’ll still be available for Topical Boot Camps! It’s all good. And she’s the best. Heartfelt Well Dunne! Syd!

Exciting weekend for promo pro NIKI HOPKINS, who has done work for KTVT and Daystar TV…she got married. Gorgeous bride indeed. She’s in the Chicago area now, so any of you who need top notch creative work, post honeymoon, she’s the one to contact. All happiness, Niki.

Would one of you wonderfully talented and creative people please come up with a new word other than blog. The word itself sounds as if there’s a digestive problem happening…not good. But while we’re on the subject, there’s some very nice postings (anybody want to vote for that?) being done by creatives…worthy our time to check out. KEVIN KOLBE, who is CSD at Capital Broadcasting’s WRAZ in Raleigh, has expanded his KevinKolbe.com site to Facebook. And it’s very uplifting. We need uplifting. about faith, family and fun. Kevin says he hopes to inspire, challenge, motivate and share. Check it out. DON SMITH, now heading up KENS creative down San Antonio way, has long been posting with his http://idopromoz.blogspot.com and it’s terrific. All about, the name says it all…promos. Effervescent DANI DUDEK, creative wrangler of Charleston’s WSCS, has a blast with her blog ATXGOSSIP.COM, which chronicles the celeb and pop culture scene…lots of lists and Ms. Dani says ‘a side of snark’. Of course, it’s also Facebookable. Promo Cowboy and amazingly talented BARRY FITZSIMMONS has taken the blog to a more media-heightened plane with his podcast, which grew out of his wordpress blog of the same name. It’s great…interviews with some industry folks. Blatant self promotion time…download the conversation the two of us had. Go on…find out why you should not spit in your wastebasket. It’s not just a good manners thing. Anybody else have a blog (that word…augh) they want to share?

Better hurry up and book for your Topical Bootcamp…I mean, only if you want more eyeballs on your newscasts. SYDNEY RUBIN is in charge of details. Topicals aren’t born.,.they’re trained!

Summertime and the livin’ is easy….hope you are all kicking back and enjoying life. Travels have been exciting and fun and its time to get back to work. OK, time to get back to a little more work but let’s not forget it’s summer and there’s a lot of swimming, reading, painting, traveling and shopping to be had. Life is short. Eat deset first.

Down Huntsville way comes word of a former promo pro who has landed a fun job doing promo for radio. Let’s hear it for J TODD LONG who is now Marketing and Promotions Manager for Cumulus Media in Huntsville, as in Alabama. Todd has headed up TV promo at WAFF, Alabama Media Group, Victoria Television and Journal (back when it was Journal) in Omaha. He’s a comedy writer and if you’ve ever caught his posts in such places as USA TODAY, you know how funny he is. He’s a grad of Southeast Missouri State in Cape…Missouri folks always get attention and a big Well Dunne!

We all know Topical Producers are the hardest people to find and the most necessary to keep those eyeballs on the screens. SYDNEY RUBIN and I are doing something about it…Topical Boot Camp. Come to us, bring us to you or (this is a cool option) let’s use technology via online. Don’t hunt for a Topical Producer…train your own. Ms. Syd is the best one to ‘splain it all so let me put you in touch with her. Imagine how you could make some ratings waves if your people are Well Dunne!, so to speak.

If one has to distill the focus of the NYC PROMAX, it would have to be: change is everything, content is still king, and all the basics of marketing translate to making the ‘new’ delivery platform messages work. Like in the beginning of TV in the early 50’s, products and even people are creating their own channels using different platforms. Technology available to all is taking the place of expensive equipment that was once only available  in large markets. Hot, Flat and Crowded is right. “Creativity democratized” is how Pepsi’s ADAM HARDER termed it.

Oishii Creative was a standout as the Design Partner of the Conference. Their work is fresh, modern, young and memorable. One of the faves is on the landing page today…this particular Dare To took extra effort to post, but well worth it. Back to Oishii Creative – they are LA-based and you need to put them on your radar. Well Dunne! Oishii. Thanks for sharing this very cool Dare To piece!

In Vegas? Sit a spell and cool down. While you’re there, look for Well Dunne! Talent’s RICH VANSLYKE, voice man fabuloso. And SYDNEY RUBIN who can tell you all about how Topical Boot Camp can make a difference in your station….find both and do it now!

The lovely LAUREN RIDGLEY, late of CSD-ship at WISN in Milwaukee, hasn’t stopped producing since she stepped away from every day TV. She just pivoted a bit and is now the proud mother of the most adorable little package of baby goodness. She and her hubby could not be more delighted. Sugar and spice and everything nice for you! Well Dunne!

Taking the bull by the horns and shaking things up, while keeping your talent and craft sharp and creative. It’s not a dream – it can be done. One such story involves ANDREW MAGPOC, who is taking his TV, marketing and production skills and using them in a new way. Well, it’s actually an old way that’s being used in a new way. After a stint at KOAA in Colorado Springs’ promo arena, he’s saddled up with the Professional Bull Riders. Yes, it’s a pro sport and it requires a lot more muscle than, say, driving a car in an oval, but let’s not digress and do not send any snarky emails. Andrew will be doing videos for the cowboys and that’s definitely interesting. Andrew’s background (SYDNEY RUBIN calls him the best, which means a lot) was forged in Hawaii at KITV and KHON and as Creative Director of KGMB before coming to the mainland and doing graphics for Oprah. Yehaw – Ride ‘em Cowboy! Well Dunne! Andrew.

Blatant self promotion department (stop reading now if you choose…but its pretty cool so go on…) in the form of BARRY FITZSIMMONS’ Promo Cowboy podcast. The guest as of Tuesday afternoon’s posting is, well, me. Entitled Why Kate Bacon Doesn’t Spit in Her Wastebasket. The man is great with enticing titles…and it is true, btw. Check it out and yes, it was a LOT of fun. Barry is the best and looks mighty fine in that hat. http://promocowboys.podbean.com/

Trading gorgeous Colorado for the Grand Canyon State is EBONYE DELANEY, headed to Scripps’ ABC KNXV, aka abc15, and their super CSD JIM HART. Ebonye will be handling promos, including topicals, and she’ll be a wonderful addition to the creative team. The University of North Texas grad is a do-it-all lady who knows how to punch a newscast and has, as Director at  KYTX in Tyler and then again in the Rose City at Raycom’s KLTV. She was promoted to News Ops Manager there, where the Promo folks spotted an asset and she was intrigued with the marketing aspect. From Texas she went to KOAA in Colorado Springs where then-CSD SYDNEY RUBIN had her doing promos when not directing the news itself. Now she’s ‘leaving the dark side’ and going full promo. Gonna love The Valley of the Sun. Well Dunne! Ebonye.

Remember that scene near the finish of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade where Indy is faced with what appears to be a bottomless abyss, making it impossible for him to reach his destination and find the sought-after Grail? Despite all the discernible evidence to the contrary that there is no way to cross the chasm, he takes a step – in faith….and finds that the abyss isn’t what it appears. It’s a powerful scene…one that replays itself every time someone makes the decision to go off on their own, leaving behind a solid job with a steady income stream. Today, playing the part of Indiana is SYDNEY RUBIN. Ms. Sydney has been CSD at NBC affil KOAA in Colorado Springs and in about three months she’ll be firing up her own marketing and branding firm. VERY exciting events on the horizon.  The Syracuse grad has a super background that includes working with Magid, WTNH in Hartford, KMGH in Denver and owning a fabulous cottage industry called Broken Branch James & Jellies. Whew…very exciting. Well Dunne! Sydney.

From the mountains to the sea. Okay, more precisely, from the mountains to Orlando, which is sorta half way between the Gulf of Mexico to the west and the North Atlantic Ocean to the east. Obviously a big change in terrain, which is what NICK JOSSENDAL is going to deal with when he decamps lovely Colorado Springs for his new job in Orlando. Nick is heading to KYM PEOPLES’ creative department at WKMG in the Big O. It’s the CBS affil owned by Graham Media Group. He’ll be sad to say goodbye to his current Marketing Director, the lovely SYDNEY RUBIN, under whose guidance he’s grown and bloomed. Nick has been a creative producer at KOAA, the NBC affil owned by Cordillera Communications. A grad of the Art Institute of Colorado, Nick has design skills as well as promo chops. His background includes media work for Altitude Sports and Entertainment, Municipal Services Group, Raecom Productions as well as freelance videographer gigs. The switch finds him in a top 20 market without those lovely mountains, but I bet he’ll keep blooming. Well Dunne! Nick!

Speaking of new titles, let’s hear it for TIM SANDERS, who is adding yet another new title to his business card. Earlier, if you remember, he was elected Alderman in his town, and now he’s been tapped to be the new Local Sales Manager of Nexstar’s WTWO/WAWV in Terre Haute, IN. Think About This: “The next time you find yourself stuck in a long line at an ATM machine, traffic jam, or supermarket checkout counter, resist your urge to react. Do not get frustrated. Do not become impatient. Do not get angry. The line is there to test you, and to give you an opportunity not to react. But if you do react, the situation controls you. The situation becomes the cause and you the effect.” ~ Yehuda Berg
