What motivates us? Can motivation be instilled? Taught? Exactly what event or person or idea gets us up off the couch and into Action Mode? Each of us are our own little mushrooms, so it makes sense that each of us would be motivated by unique situations. KEVIN GORYL, a former promo pro who was Marketing Director at WXIX/Cincinnati as well as wrote and produced in DC, St Louis and for National Geographic recently shared what motivated him to make a change in his life. He founded an underwear company. Not just any underwear company, either. One with a mission – to eliminate the shortage of underwear at domestic violence shelters and rape crisis centers around the country. Donated clothing doesn’t include the basics…so Kevin and his wife Sara stepped in. This is how he explains it:
The idea for the company was inspired by the death of former WTTG Promo Manager TERRY WHEELOCK. Terry passed away from complications due to alcoholism; after his death he was classified as an isolated alcoholic. Terry and I were very close, we talked a few times per week even after he had moved to Hawaii. His death was not only shocking to me, it left a huge hole in my heart. On the way home from Terry’s memorial service I made a pledge to myself that I would giveback through volunteering and donating in his name. While searching for things to donate I began to notice that underwear was always at the top of the list of items being asked for. One day, while volunteering at The Brighton Center for Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation I asked the Director why underwear were such a needed item. She told me that nonprofits rely on donations for clothing and most people donate used clothes but, for obvious reasons, nonprofits don’t typically accept used underwear as a donation. Many of the women at The Brighton Center are nonviolent offenders who are released straight from prison into the rehab center, these women arrive with just the clothes on their backs.
So Too Apparel was born. And, being a guy with a TV background, ‘the business’ has noticed; their fashions are going to be part of CBS’ new drama Training Day. Yep, even got an Instagram account for it (trainingday2017).
Want to be part of something that makes a real difference for those who aren’t as lucky as you? Next up for Kevin and Sara is expanding to a line of men’s underwear, with the goal of educating men about domestic violence. Donate just $1 on Kickstarter, and it will make a HUGE difference. It’s the sexiest underwear on the planet.
Starting Monday by doing good…no better way to start a week. Well Dunne! Kevin. And Well Dunne! everyone…
