Austin, Texas isn’t just home to UT and capital of the Lone Star State. It’s an amazing, vibrant city that loves music, bar-b-q, TexMex, SXSW…and Willie Nelson lives there. It’s where MARK WILLENBORG has been CSD (named changed to Director of Marketing) for KVUE for over 12 years, doing a magnificent job and being the greatest guy around. A gentleman – which is worth more than gold. Got word today from his GM, former promo pro KRISTIE GONZALES, that Mark is hanging up his TV hat so he can join The Wittliff Collections at Texas State University in San Marcos, which is just down the road from Austin. (yes, the outlet mall there is THAT good…) Mark will be marketing their archives of writers, photographers and musicians from Texas and Mexico including the afore-mentioned Willie, plus luminaries like Cormac McCarthy and Sandra Cisneros. THAT sounds muy exciting. Mark worked for two other operations under the Belo banner, KHOU in Houston and Texas Cable News in Dallas. He’s got a degree from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. Nobody deserves a new exciting path, but TV will be the less for it. Well Dunne! Mark. BTW, he’ll be at KVUE until February 4…give him a Well Dunne! yourself.

Job Opening – Director of Marketing KVUE Austin (best News Director in the country MIKE REDDING!!!)

Job Opening  – Sr. Promo Producer KSHB Kansas City

KEVIN KOLBE, who heads up the creative at FOX50 in Raleigh, is embarking on what seems like an ideal promo, only he’s not really doing it as a promo.  Kevin’s a big fan of Keifer Sutherland and 24, and when it was on (before Kiefer became The Lone Survivor), Mr. Kolbe teamed with uber-popular Raleigh market MIX radio man BILL JORDAN to do Two Guys Talking 24 vlog.  Now that 24:Legacy is coming, in an exciting new form but some some of the same characters, they’re turning on the cameras again and are going to repeat the fun. What a great promo…FOX folks you listening? They’ll be posting their vlog on Tuesdays….I’ll be there. Well Dunne! Kevin and Bill.

There’s nothing like promoting someone who has been working with you. It really is a vote of confidence as well as an exciting new opportunity for both parties. So, with that in mind, let’s hear it for STEVE SANCHEZ, newly named Promotion Manager for TEGNA’s CBS affiliate KYTX in Tyler, Texas. Steve has been a news editor who, no doubt, will take those lightening quick editing skills to a more artistic plane doing TV promo. His new boss, Marketing Director KEVIN MEYER, thinks Steve is on the road to being a real Rock Star. Sounds like it. Steve has been busy outside the station, namely being part of a film production. Devils Deal (available on Amazon) was shot in East Texas and Steve edited it. He loves film and this sounds like an ideal situation for everybody. It’s all coming up roses in Tyler. (bonus points if you get that)  Big Well Dunne! Steve. And thanks Kevin!

Bravo to former promo pro now GM STEVE CARTER who is trading his Atlantic oysters for Rocky Mountain ones when he moves back to Denver to be GM of KUSA. Steve is currently GM of Tegna’s Portland, ME station WCSH (where they have the best News Director ever…take a bow MIKE REDDING). Steve knows his way around KUSA, where he was VP of Marketing and Promotion for just about 20 years. Big Well Dunne!

RIGHT NOW…turn off your phones, shoo people out of your office, close the door, turn up the volume of your computer and WATCH THIS VIDEO. It is THE most important lesson in economics you will EVER learn. DO IT. There will be a quiz later.

Change is what keeps the planet going. Life is change. Every cell…every atom…every everything is changing constantly. When change stops, so does life. So change is good. Up in Portland, Maine, MIKE MARSHALL is about to make a change. After 40 plus years of being in the TV biz, he’s going to turn off the office lights, close the door and see what new adventures life will bring that don’t revolve around ratings and sweeps. Mike is an amazing guy who is currently Vice President of Programming and Marketing for Tegna’s NBC affil WCSH in Maine’s most lovely city. He walked in the door of WCHS in 1976 as Production Director after spending a year at WABI in Bangor as a director. He’s had a series of jobs and titles at the station, each one indicative of his talents and leadership. Above it all, he’s a gentleman.  And he’s gotten to work with one of the very best News Directors ever – MIKE REDDING. Can’t wait to hear what Mr. Marshall dives into next…it will no doubt be well worth watching. Well Dunne! Mike.

Think About This:  You start dying slowly – By Pablo Neruda

You start dying slowly
if you do not travel,
if you do not read,
If you do not listen to the sounds of life,
If you do not appreciate yourself.
You start dying slowly
When you kill your self-esteem;
When you do not let others help you.
You start dying slowly
If you become a slave of your habits,
Walking everyday on the same paths…
If you do not change your routine,
If you do not wear different colours
Or you do not speak to those you don’t know.
You start dying slowly
If you avoid to feel passion
And their turbulent emotions;
Those which make your eyes glisten
And your heart beat fast.
You start dying slowly
If you do not change your life when you are not satisfied with your job, or with your love,
If you do not risk what is safe for the uncertain,
If you do not go after a dream,
If you do not allow yourself,
At least once in your lifetime,
To run away from sensible advice…

A Christmas Story is set in northern Indiana, but in true Hollywood fashion, Ralphie’s house in the iconic holiday movie is actually on the west side of Cleveland. Perhaps TOM DUSKA will have time to drive by and see it when he isn’t doing his creative thing for Scripps’ ABC affil, WEWS. Tom is new to Cleveland – just finishing up his first week on the job as part of CSD DAN COYLE’s promo team. Tom’s official title is Multimedia Marketing Producer so he’ll be doing a lot of varied fun things with an emphasis on late news. He’s been working for WICU/WSEE, NBC and FOX in Erie, PA, handling technical and creative roles.  Originally a photojournalist, Tom later transitioned to graphic artist, eventually moved into promotions/production, and also worked as a technical director. Man does it all. I think it would be cool if he took a selfie at Ralphie’s – or took the whole promo team over there for a selfie…yeah? Yeah!  Well Dunne! Tom.

Have to share a gorgeous and touching holiday promo done up at Tegna’s Maine operation, Portland’s WCSH and Bangor’s WLBZ. By clicking here, you can see the spot conceived and written by MARK PARENT, Promo and Production Manager in Bangor, and edited by Creative Services Coordinator SAMANTHA HAMMOND. News Director MIKE REDDING was so moved by it, he posted it and said he was proud of a station that respects and welcomes all. MIKE MARSHALL, VP of Programming and Marketing at the stations is proud I know. Well Dunne! one and all.

Well Dunne! Talent’s KELLY PIDGEON is multi-talented. Besides his amazing voice, he’s a musician. Take a moment to listen to Boats Against The Current’s latest. (IQ points awarded if you know the name reference).

Enough with the winter! West Coasters, you can stop reading now. This is for the folks most everywhere in the country (and outside as well – the UK, for one, is having a horrible time, too!) who are more than ready for an end to this pounding winter. ANDI KIMBROUGH, who is a promo producer for Daystar TV down in the DFW area had a chunk of ice bounce up and destroy her windshield. Luckily, only the windshield was hurt. Up in Terre Haute, IN, CSD TIM SANDERS of WTWO/WAWV thought his car was on the fritz when the outside temp reading on his way to work read -12. Nope, car was working fine – that was the temp. How the amazing folks in Boston are dealing with nearly 100 inches of snow (omg) is beyond comprehension. Hear that RUSS NELLIGAN? Sending you warm thoughts. And to that end, let’s remember the following: Daylight Savings Time starts on March 8 and the official start to Spring is March 25. Well Dunne! Spring.

Up in Portland, Maine News Director MIKE REDDING, helming Gannett’s WCSH, is now the proud grandfather of the most adorable Master Trevor Redding. Well Dunne! Redding gene pool.
