For all you who struggle to find the perfect candidate for your open slots, there’s hope. Here the tale of one such match from Fox59 (WXIN) in Indianapolis, where CSD MICHAEL BROUDER found JEFF FIELD. Let’s let Michael speak for himself: “I am very happy to let you know that Jeff has joined the FOX59/Indiana’s 4 team in the newly created position of On-Air Promotion Coordinator.  He comes to us from Tribune’s regional creative services department in Chicago where he worked in a similar capacity, but now with the added benefit of being close to his alma mater, Indiana University! Since arriving at the beginning of the month, he hasn’t missed a beat promoting two of the top CW and Fox affiliates in the country!” A big Well Dunne! to Jeff.

Well Dunne! Talent’s BERT THOMAS MORRIS is recording a music project for a friend’s band.  Very cool. Of course, he’s also doing his voice work as well.

Cynopsis Kids Imagination Award is June 7 so make sure you register. CYNTHIA TURNER always does a fabulous job of throwing an event, and the keynote speaker is RICHARD WIESE, who hosts Born to Explore with Richard Wiese. Yeah, his manager must have helped him name the show.

Job Alert – Producer, Content at Fox59 in Indy.

FOX59 Indianapolis is looking for news junkies to help us share stories and better engage our local community through digital and social media.  You should be motivated, tech-savvy and addicted to current events. You should feel pangs of withdrawal when you’re unplugged. You should appreciate a great headline that makes clicking irresistible. You should enjoy turning around a clever tweet before the rest of your friends, whenever a big story breaks.

We are looking for content specialists, not a traditional webmaster. Your passion for using technology to more effectively share news and information is what’s critical. We are looking for folks who will be evangelists and help the entire newsroom embrace digital and social media.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure news is consistently, accurately and quickly shared through digital and social media.
  • Use the right tools to tell the story: whether it’s a brief update, article, photo, video, etc.
  • Learn what appeals most to the community and promote FOX59 content accordingly.
  • Foster dialog, debate and camaraderie among FOX59 fans and followers.
  • Navigate newsroom systems to retrieve scripts, assignments and video clips.
  • Lightly edit raw video so we can share news before it’s packaged for broadcast.
  • Ensure that rights, embargos and similar restrictions are followed.
  • Apply thoughtful, accurate labels, categories and descriptions to local news content.
  • Use metrics to predict what content will be most popular and deliver it.
  • Assist the sales department with production and promotion of client sponsorship

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Able to accurately handle multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organization, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to work well independently and as a member of a larger team.
  • Comfortable with web applications, non-linear video editing and standard office software.
  • Flexible and able to handle additional hours when severe weather or breaking news occurs.

Above all, we are looking for exceptional collaborators and communicators with a proven ability to earn the respect and support of managers, peers, and consumers alike. Cover letters are welcome and encouraged  Please send stating position desired and referral source to Human Resources, WXIN-TV, 6910 Network Place, Indianapolis, IN 46278.  EOE.

New Orleans’ WGNO has a new promo producer/writer/editor and his name is JARED BURNS. Thought you’d enjoy hearing his take on his new slot:  “My name is Jared Burns and I’ve come to New Orleans, LA from across the state.  Moving up to a market size of 53 here at WGNO is a big step up from KPLC, market 176, in Lake Charles, LA, but I’m enjoying all the new sights and opportunities. Going from a commercial producer position in Lake Charles to a promotions producer here in New Orleans is definitely a challenge and a change of pace, workflow, and responsibilities. However, I’m definitely glad that I made the move; I’ve learned a lot and gotten my hands on great new equipment all within the first month.  I definitely consider this to be positive career move and am looking forward to learning so much more in this position.” Well Dunne! Jared and thanks to his CSD JEFF FUNK.

Today’s picture is not of New Orleans or Jared Burns, but it is a cute one that encompasses two fun favorites. That’s WHEC’s new creative guru STEVE PATRICK reading STEPHEN ARNOLD’s very cool read, The Story of Six Strings.

Job Alert – Art Director at KPHO in Phoenix.

Summer weekends at Lake Ontario. Its on the list for the talented STEVE PATRICK, who is heading to Rochester to take the creative reigns at Hubbard’s WHEC, the NBC affil. The entire Patrick family is hitting the road and will be much closer to family. He hates to depart the good folks in North Carolina’s capital, Raleigh, where he’s been Marketing Manager for Media General’s WNCN, where the weather is bit gentler than upstate New York.  Steve spent time writing and producing at WIVB’s operation in Buffalo before taking the Promo Manager slot at Hearst’s Pittsburgh operation, WTAE. He’s a Fordham grad who has a great sense of humor and is going to be a real asset to WHEC. Well Dunne! Steve!

Coast to coast and Texas in-between. That’s the Cliff Notes version of graphic designer RAY BARCOMB’s career adventure. Ms. Ray is now happily on the west coast doing graphics for NBC in the Bay Area. Yes, down in San Jose. Obviously he knew the way. He came cross-country from working as a hub designer for Sinclair at their Hunt Valley, Maryland locale. A veteran, Mr. Ray also has been a resident of Fort Hood in central Texas. You’re going to love SF Ray, but watch out for that sourdough bread…it can be addicting. Well Dunne!

Sparkling eyes and a smile that lights up a room. They both belong to the newest Creative Director/Executive Producer for Play Creative TV. Let’s hear it for ALEX LANG. Yes, the news is fresher than the produce at the corner farmer’s market. Alex comes over from his slot as VP of Creative at G4 Net. He’s also done that marketing magic as Creative Director, On-Air Promotion at ABC. His first gig was writing and producing at The WB. Listen to this..he has a Masters degree in poetry from Antioch as well as a BA from USC. A big bright Well Dunne! to you Alex!

Imagine you have a fabulous house right on the bay in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. Now imagine you have to commute 68 miles or more away from said house. Yep, that drive gets old fast. Let’s not even throw in the cost of gasoline. PAULA HERSH is going to give up her commute come June 1 when she joins the government cable channel out of Newport News. Ms. Paula will be saying goodbye to her slot as Marketing Director of WWBT/NBC and WUPV/CW in Richmond, VA. She’s been there for 13 years and saying aloha is tough, but that house on the water, not to mention more time with her hubby, is very enticing. Paula has spent all her promo career time in Richmond, working for radio’s WRXL and then Continental Cablevision. She did head to Orlando and the Golf Channel, but the Syracuse grad is a Virginia lady for sure. May all your sunrises and seafood be spectacular, Paula. Well Dunne!

Tucson has gorgeous vistas, great shopping, super spas and saguaro cacti, among other things. But it won’t have the delightful LEC COBLE much longer. Lec is leaving his Director of Marketing slot at CBS affil KOLD to take a corporate job with Raycom. That means decamping the Sonoran Desert and heading to his new office in Montgomery, Alabama. His new title will be Corporate Director of Marketing and he’ll be working with VP of of Raycom Media Marketing, ANNE ADKINS. Lec is a North Carolina guy and worked for Capital Broadcasting in Raleigh. Montgomery isn’t NC, but it is closer to family. The change goes down sometime after he helps find his own replacement at the combo on Tucson.  Lec and his lovely wife will have to find great Mexican food in Montgomery, which sounds like a delicious adventure. So happy to hear about the great promotion, Lec. Well Dunne!

Sometimes, you just know that a person is the right fit for your creative team. Such was the case when CHRIS WOLF, Director of Programming and Creative Services at Charlotte’s WJZY, met MELVIN NIX. Chris was on the hunt for a creative services producer and artist for the CW station in the Queen City. Melvin fit the bill instantly (well, 5 minutes or so) and is a Charlottean to boot. Schooled at the DAVE School at Universal Orlando. DAVE stands for Digital Animation and Visual Effects. Pretty cool. Melvin has done work for sports broadcasts and all kinds of cutting edge graphics places. Needless to say, this is a happy ending. Well Dunne! Melvin.

Think About This: “Laugh, even when you feel too sick or too worn out or tired.  Smile, even when you’re trying not to cry and the tears are blurring your vision.  Sing, even when people stare at you and tell you your voice is crappy.  Trust, even when your heart begs you not to.  Twirl, even when your mind makes no sense of what you see.  Frolick, even when you are made fun of. Kiss, even when others are watching. Sleep, even when you’re afraid of what the dreams might bring.
Run, even when it feels like you can’t run any more.  And, always, remember, even when the memories pinch your heart. Because the pain of all your experience is what makes you the person you are now. And without your experience—you are an empty page, a blank notebook, a missing lyric. What makes you brave is your willingness to live through your terrible life and hold your head up high the next day. So don’t live life in fear. Because you are stronger now, after all the crap has happened, than you ever were back before it started.”  ~ Alysha Speer

Who would have thought a hot dog commercial from Pittsburgh, PA would lead to a morning news promo for ABC in Raleigh. But it did, thus underscoring the concept that super ideas can be anywhere, one just need to be open to possibility. Enter the subject: Z1, a 21 year-old who hails from Steel City. He’s the talented musician who wrote then rapped Raleigh-Durham’s WTVD’s newest promo for their Morning News. Could say “from AM to Z1”. Z, which I believe is his nickname, comes from a family of seven children, all entertainers. They have their own non-profit, http://www.kidnationfoundation.com/, and they go around to regional schools and perform for students who have 4.0 gpa’s. They call it the honor roll tour.  The WTVD creative team is led by CURTIS MILES. Take a gander here. And let’s chime in with a Well Dunne! all of yas.

Many of you are extraordinary bosses and also work for extraordinary bosses. Here’s a Must Read for everybody on how to be extraordinary. http://www.inc.com/geoffrey-james/8-core-beliefs-of-extraordinary-bosses.html

Think About This:  "Many people spend a great deal of time complaining about the government, their parents, and the sorry state of affairs in the world, but in doing so they forget that we are the miracle. They blame God for the suffering that surrounds us saying, ‘How could a loving God allow such things to happen?’ They behave like slaves who blame an overseer, forgetting that free will has given them the responsibility, so that the deeper issue has nothing do with God or the government but rather with the fundamental shift that must occur in the human heart if peace is to become a reality. We think of responsibility as a burdensome obligation when in fact it is a gift." ~ Darren John Main

Think About This:  A wise woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream. The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give it to him. She did so without hesitation. The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime. But a few days later he came back to return the stone to the wise woman.

"I’ve been thinking," he said, "I know how valuable the stone is, but I give it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me the stone."    ~  "The Wise Woman’s Stone"   Author Unknown

Let’s hear a drum roll along with the sound of confetti being thrown and perhaps a nice background of trumpets. Over the top? Not for MAC MAHAFFEE, who is one of the super guys in the TV marketing world. And he’s been given a promotion. Gannett’s WKYC has named him Director of Digital Media Marketing which by its very name is what his new job will entail. He’s been On-Air Promotion Manager under the one and only MICKI BYRNES, CSD. Mr. Mac is a proud grad of AppState in Boone NC where he also worked in their Sports Department doing videos. Other stops along the way include promo writing and producing at WFMY in Greensboro and Time Warner Adcast. His passion for running must keep the creative juices pumping. A special Well Dunne! to Mac.

The Twin Cities has a new Director of Marketing in their midst. Welcome to CATHY HELEAN, who is now making herself at home at KARE, Gannett’s NBC affil in Minneapolis/St. Paul. That includes NBC affil WFLA. Ms. H has worked at some of the best operations around, like WSB in Atlanta and WTVD in Raleigh. A big Well Dunne! goes out to her.

Once CHRIS AYERS found himself in the Arizona sun, he didn’t want to leave. Who would? Now, Chris has a new job that allows him to stay in Phoenix, stay in the sun, and still do TV Art, which he does ever so wonderfully. Mr. Ayers is departing his current slot at Meredith’s CBS affil in the Valley of the Sun (there’s that sun reference again) at KPHO where he was Multimedia Art Director. Well, until he leaves in a few weeks, he still IS the Multimedia Art Director. Where’s he going? His new job is Right This Minute Art Director for the good folks at MagicDust Television, headed by the much respected and beloved former KTVK News Director BILL MILLER. In Phoenix. Chris is a major favorite of Well Dunne!, having begun his TV Art journey at NBC affil WCNC in Charlotte where my Art Director DOUGLAS KARABASZ brought young Chris into the fold while he was still a student at nearby Winthrop University. From there, he jumped to the FOX operation in The Queen City before going off to WBBM in Chicago, where he did graphic design. A huge Well Dunne! to Chris Ayers!
